Question regarding Catastrophic Illness from newbie

Hello,
i am new to this board and reaching out for any advice you might have. Please feel free to direct me to other boards, organizations any thing.

Here is my story in a nutshell:

1. In 2004 I had a sudden catastrophic illness that landed me in the hospital nearly a month
2. I had Catastrophic insurance
3. Even after the insurance I owed $20,000 in bills and it has somewhat destroyed me financially
4. At the time I was unemployed and my income for the year is very low, in addition, although I was not on disability, I certainly was not able to work for about 6 to 8 months after the illness.
5. I lost everything, my apartment, may savings and so forth.

Question:
I have had people say I could apply for financial reimbursement if I show my income and the amount of bills I had to pay. Some mention medicaid reimbursement. Some mention disability.

I am clueless. Could I get advice from an attorney, and if so what kind?

Should I just move on?

Thanks for any advice you might have.

Because the illness was in 2004, I do not know if Medicaid would reimburse you. Normally, Medicaid will only pay medical bills for several months before your eligibility date. Did you apply for Medicaid in 2004?
