question on the chat option on facebook?

On the chat option what does it mean if one of your friends has a crescent moon symbol to the right of their name? Obviously if they have the full dot then they are on line and available to chat but if they have the crescent are they still logged on to facebook but not using it or does it mean that they are logged in but using another another feature (or on another web page)?
Im not very web wise so forgive me if its obvious.
