Question on Nokia N73 firmware updates.?

I'm getting a Nokia N73 soon and I've heard about the phone "wreaking","dying","crashing",etc from being updated through the Nokia PC Suite. That got me pretty scared because i don't have much money to spare and if it crashed for whatever my dad will kill me. Do you recommend if i should update the firmware? So what do i need to know when i am updating the firmware, so that i wont freak out seeing my semi-new phone with a blank screen. -___-
