question on back pain

Okay, I have this middle to upper back pain that started about a week ago. I don't know what it is. I walk on the treadmill and it hurts to breathe. Hubby says that I need to get over the hurdle of the pain to strengthen my back. Is that true?? I know that my back is no longer very strong. Can back pain radiate and create kidney or around that area, pain? I also have chronic neck and shoulder pain but this new back pain seems to also radiate around to my stomach every now and then. Can back pain do all of this??

Yes, back pain can radiate to other areas and cause pain there. But if this is a new pain, you might want to see a doctor just to be sure nothing is going on. Being short of breath is one thing. Breathing causing pain is another. I would see a doctor just to be sure. And once you get the "all's clear", work through it, like your hubby said. :) Working through pain is a lot easier when you know the pain isn't a signal that something's wrong!

I hope you're able to get back on the treadmill soon, strengthen those muscles, and have less pain overall!

Blessings,
Emily

Emily is right! What you don't want to do is to let pain limit your life. My aunt got where she would have a pain and not do what caused that pain again. Pretty soon she was almost a shut in. Make sure that you work through those little pain episodes. They aren't pleasant to be sure, but working through them gives you character my mother used to say...as if I don't have enough already!

You know it feels as if my back wants to pop when I turn a certain way but won't. I have never heard of back pain radiating around the kidney area and that is what is throwing me off. I do have the middle to upper back pain with the neck and shoulder pain but I have never heard of it making the kidneys feel any pain or around that area. A friend of mine thought it was kidney infection but I don't have any problem going to the bathroom or going often or anything like that so I don't think it's a kidney infection. Can the back pain really hurt around the kidney or ribcage area? It hurts a little bit when I sleep on my side now..either side and I think I am pulling something but not sure what. I don't have health insurance right now so going to the Dr. isn't an option right now. Thanks for your help!

Have you checked into your local health department? Most areas now have health care available through clinics run by the health department for free or on a sliding scale. That's what we used when we lived in an area that had lousy doctors and our insurance was awful. The health department doctors were better than the private doctors on the island where we were located, and the sliding scale was really good! We paid $18 for a full visit, including x-rays when they were needed once! Our insurance was a joke. It wasn't even considered in the sliding scale.

Hope you can get some help,
Emily
