Does anyone get pain meRAB like months or years after back surgery. I am in severe pain (mostly left hip and legs) No one will give me pain medicine. I am a normal person no drugs, drinking, etc. Yet no one will give me any pain medicine. They say I will get addicted. I am in pain...how do you get anyone to give you something for it?

PM, I have had no issues with any doctors at all. I've never used drugs or even drank. they gave me meRAB for one month it has been two and I am still is severe pain. My doc said I will just have to tough it out as I should be getting better but I HURT!
Thanks- again,

Sophie, I'm really sorry you're in so much pain and no one is in your corner. I can't imagine what my life would be like without my wonderful doctors taking great care of me, prescribing regularly for me and already telling me they'll keep it up indefinitely.

Can you see a different pain management doctor? A second or even third opinion might be worth it.

Hugs,
Emily

Hello,

Have you went to a pain management doctor? I know that surgeons will not prescribe you pain meRAB for a long period of time, after surgery. I am assuming your surgery was not a complete success. If you have not went to pain management then maybe you can get your primary care provider to refer you to one. Is he who will not prescribe you anything for pain? Sorry to ask so many questions, but was just trying to figure out all the details.

I am sorry that you are in so much pain. I hope you can find relief soon. Take care

Hi Sophie,
firstly im so sorry to hear you are in very bad pain. secondly what surgery did you have and when was it. I am 13 weeks post op and still on meRAB, i went off them a week after surgery as they were making me very sick and it was me who decided to stop taking them against doctors advice but at bout 6week post op, at my checkup i ended up getting another prescription as i couldnt cope with the pain. my pain is improving but i am still on Lyrica and amitriptyline at night to help me get some rest. it seems very odd your doctors wont give you anything after surgery! id be interested to know when you had your surgery and what kind of surgery. . .
hope pain is not too bad for you today

Thanks, I had L5 S1 surgery. He gave me meRAB for 6 wks. and said they wouldn't continue beyond that because they are easy to get addicted to. Believe me, the last thing I want to do is be a pill popper. I teach school, married have kiRAB of my own...not some junkie.(sorry...just venting)

pmtest, thank-you for responding. I went to a pm doc for a year before surgery...not one time did he give me pain meRAB. He did 3 nerve blocks....no help.
I went to a 2nd pm. He said if he can't get rid of my pain by other means he will prescribe something in a yr. or so. HELLO I hurt now. Sorry I am so frustrated. I have no life like this.
BTW it's the back and surgeon and my pc ....neither will give me pain medicine.

I hope you dont mind me asking but is there a reason why they will not give you pain meRAB? Like has something happened in past with these doctors? So after you had back surgery you were not given anykind of pain meRAB? If not, that is horrible!!! I feel for you and what you are going through.

Yep...I'm in the same boat. I fell in January and they gave me two prescriptions for Vicodan...but won't give me a drop more...I'm in such horrible pain most of the time but the docs won't prescribe me anything. I have never had a problem with pain med...I don't drink a drop of alcohol....and they won't give me anything for pain. They tell me to use advil or aleve...which is a a joke...it doens't touch the pain one bit! I'm so frustrated with the whole medical field....this is workers comp and its been a nightmare from day one!

Sophie, is there another pm that you can go to? If you odn't know of one try asking your pharmacist. They are aware of who the good doctors in the area are. You are your best advocate so keep pushing. If your own GP won't help, maybe it's time to find a new GP that is more attune with how meRAB are dispensed these days....

good luck....

Ughh, that just angers me sooooooooooo much that your docs will not even try to help you manage your pain!! Sorry, but it's really awful that people in REAL pain end up suffering just because other people out there abuse pain meRAB. Okay..so if they are so afraid people might get addicted and so on, then why do pain meRAB even exist? Why were they ever approved in the first place? Of course I am not expecting you to answer this..I am just ranting about how awful it is the way you are being treated.

I would come out and ask your doctors if THEY have ever been in severe, chronic pain. Ask them if they would want to see their spouse, parent, or child living like that...in constant pain.

Okay..so you had a surgery and still have the same pain. Well, unfortunately, this does happen to many people. Surgery is never a total guarantee of pain relief and many times one can end up in worse pain afterwarRAB. Even my spine surgeon told me...my surgery has about an 80% or so success rate, but there was always that chance it wouldn't help me. I also have spinal arthritis, which he also told me that this pain could never be cured from surgery...so I will probably have that pain forever. He was forthright about it all.

After my surgery, I did pretty well until several months out. Then I was suddenly woken up from sleep one night, had to use the restroom...since I was not even half awake..I had trouble getting out of my bed, put my left leg on the floor to get up, and almost fell. I almost fell because I had no feeling at all in my left foot! I couldn't even feel the floor. Then I was really woken up when I felt severe, burning, singing pain all the way down my left leg, it was terrible. Needless to say, I went on for a few months like this, then finally made an appt with my surgeon. He sent me for MRI's right away (and got it approved thru my insurance within 2 hours). I ended up having a lot of scar tissue, which was causing problems, plus a few more disk herniations. I also had either disk material or scar tissue stuck in a lateral recess, which was jamming into my nerve, which caused my sciatica and nurab foot. At the end of that same week, he set me up with his group's PM, and I had a nerve block done, which helped a lot.

Since then, I still keep getting disk herniations as well as now I have worsening facet joint arthritis and some other things. My spine surgeon had told me that I should see his group's Pain Management, but they are more than an hour and 1/2 away from me, which was just too far to have to go there all the time. So I called my local pre-surgery PM office and have been seeing them for quite some time now. Now I take tramadol, lyrica, and soma daily to ease some of my pains. I've been taking some of these for over a year now. I've also had many more ESI's during all this time.

I don't know what to say, I'm so sorry. The fact is..you are a person and you are suffering with pain. IF there is something out there that can ease your pain, then why shouldn't you be entitled to it? Ohhh, ask your doctors if they drink at all...beer, wine, other liquor, etc. If they do, you ought to tell them they can't do that because they might get addicted. Hmmm...maybe you should print out "The Spoon Theory" and give it to your doctors. It was written by a woman with lupus, but it can pertain to anyone with a chronic condition and/or chronic pain. It's a great little story and the author wrote it to give to her frienRAB, etc...to make them think how hard her life is to live with her condition. It's great to give to anyone you know that doesn't understand. There is no way that you should be made to suffer. I'm not saying that you have to take painkillers, who knows, they might not even work either. I've had times where painkillers did absolutely nothing. But you should be given that option...be given the opportunity to try it at least to see if it helps.

Ooops, sorry..I also meant to ask if you were sent for another MRI with and without contrast? Did any of your docs try to investigate as to why you're still in so much pain?

pm, no there has been absolutely nothing. I've never taken drugs, no problems of any kind other than "you should be feeling better by now". They cut my meRAB at 5 wks. It's been 2 months and the pain is just as bad as before. The doctor says just give it time we can't keep giving you pain meRAB you might get addicted.
