Question involving customs and courtesies in a somewhat odd case?

I am a cadet in the Civil Air Patrol. At our weekly meetings we go through a security gate to get on the Air Force base that we meet at. Should I address the people at the gates as sir or ma'am even if they aren't officers? I don't hold any official rank of course but I am supposed to use customs and courtesies when dealing with them. Just wondering because a few people in my squadron had differing opinions on this.
The people at the gates are soldiers in case that wasn't obvious.
