Question for you guys....

Enigma Reborn

New member
I'm a longtime user of the Palm OS (started with Visor, have an m500 that my wife wants).

I'm really wanting a T3, but here's my dilemma:

I don't want to spend the $ on a laptop, so I want to use a Wireless/IR Keyboard for the Landscape mode on the T3 (working on Masters degree, lots of notes!) All I need a newer PDA for is PIM, Docs2Go, and notes. I have like 2 games that I actually play. I only need a cheaper solution than a laptop--that's the full extent of my use.

I keep seeing the posts that say that the IR keyboards are the "suicide pill" for the TT3....

1. Is that true? Or is it merely a certain brand (Targus, etc.) that kills the T3? Which brand is safe?

2. With the patch on the palmone website, have the SD issues been fixed for the most part? I've read all the articles/threads I can find but have found it to be about 50/50 in decisiveness regarding this.

I'm on a limited budget (wife's a teacher) and found the T3 at my local OfficeMax for $280.00. Is this a safe investment?

Thanks in advance for your help here.

I have a PalmOne IR keyboard for my T3....no issues.

$280 is a good buy on a T3 but your bigger problem in my mind might be battery life.

Your good for about 3 to 4 hours of continous usage but add in the additional "heat" needed to run the IR keyboard and that's going to drop to 2.5 hours or so of continous use.

I'd get a supplmental power supply if you can't "plug" in somewhere.

I have the Palm Power Pak and it will easily provide 8 hours of continous usage when fully charged in conjunction with the T3's battery and then some.

1. The killer (WSOD) keyboard is the NEW Universal Wireless Keyboard by PalmOne (Part # 3169WW). The driver on CD WILL KILL your T3 if you have certain other apps loaded. It can be unkilled by power down reset (aka partial disassembly to disconnect/reconnect battery).

If you download NEW driver 12/13/04 version 1.05 from PalmOne, it fixes WSOD problem.

But driver STILL has problems (Fatal Exception) with Updated PhoneLink of 11/29/04.

2. The ROM SD update should already be applied especially if you're buying a new unit, and SD issues are fixed. But it does not hurt to appliy it a second time. It will not install the second time, and will display message instead. So if your worried, apply it first thing when you get the T3.

3. $280 is good price for a new unit. But Office-Max sucks (IHMO - too long to elaborate here: short - an EXTREMELY DISATISFIED CUSTOMER).
