Question for writers/authors, Others can answer as well?

I love to read and write. Even though I may not use it as a career, I want to get better at it. I have written long stories for fun, but they take a lot of time and effort.
What are little projects I can do to improve with writing and developing a style?
I have submitted stories to places like Mibba and Quizilla.

for character development, try writing about a friend or yourself, but commit several paragraphs to it. Choose your favorite ones and figure out why you like them. Include a dialogue, of course.
You can do the same thing for setting.

For plot, come up with a few events that are unrelated, put them in a random order, and try to make a flowing storyboard from them all.

what i like to do, to practice my scenery description since i lack in that department, is whenever i drive in a car, or stare out the window, i write in my head. if that makes sense. i think of things, like imagery wise. about how the "long blades of grass sway in the wind, just brushing the edges of the sky."
if anything, though, if you want to improve your all-around, compare your writing to everyday. do your characters sound like real people? does their house sound like a real house? do their problems seem like real problems?
also, you could take a creative writing class.

Read lots, and pay attention to how real writers write. Also, write alot, too. Like, whenever you have free time. Here's a site to post your stories when you're done: http://writerfriendly.webs.com/
Also, if you help others and leave comments/sugestions/etc, that could also develop your skill, by just learning what sounds the best. I'm BitterBlue on the site, by the way.~***

Find websites that you can submit stories to and ask for the reader's opinion. I also write long or short stories for fun. ^_^
