I've taken a S9000 FinePix camera home from my Photography class over the weekend but as of yet I can't find a USB cord to transfer the pictures onto my PC. My PC does have a port in the front that I can place the memory card in (xD-Picture Card, 256MB), but when I try and open it the computer tells me I need to format it first, and it offers me that option.

So my question is- what will formatting the card do? Will it alter it in any way? Will it still be able to transfer pictures via USB, and will it still be able to be used on other PCs or card readers? If I damage this stuff in any way, the teacher will hit me with a massive fine, so I'm trying to be really careful.
The camera belongs to the school/teacher, so I'm unsure if it's ever been formatted before.

When I uploaded pictures via USB at school, I was able to delete and transfer pictures from it to the computer via Windows Explorer. I assume that means it was formatted at one point, and chances are if I format it here something bad will happen.

I think, unless something new comes up, I'll just play it safe and try to find a USB cord around here. Thanks for the advice.

If you format, you will lose your photos.

If the card reader on your pc doesn't work, it might be that your reader can't read bigger than a 2G card. Best bet, invest in an external usb card reader, around 10.00. They read all cards sizes and types.

Since placing a memory card in a card reader cannot in itself corrupt a card, I have to ask you if you formatted the card before you used it using the format feature on the camera or at any time delete unwanted image files on the card to make room for more?

If you did not format the card before use, image files written to the card may have become corrupt.

If you deleted image files to make more room on the card instead of just putting fresh card in the camera, card corruption is almost guaranteed

I have the same camera.
For a simple solution take the memory card to Walmart and have a cd made with your pics then do what you want without formating.
In order to take pics on a new card you may have to format it.
I would have to get my directions out for that. Email me if you need to do that.
hope it helps
