Health insurance shouldn't even be a part of the system. No of course it is not fair to tell a for profit company to accept a practically guaranteed loss and still remain in business and still provide a service. Nor is it fair to tell a person born with a heart defect to simply die because they are un-insurable and cannot afford health care.
It is not fair to tell a soldier who was injured in war that they cannot have insurance because they have pre-existing conditions and their sole source of medical care must be a VA hospital 200 miles away.
We believe in capitalism as our main system of economics. But, capitalism only works when consumers have a choice. You bought the car you drive or the watch you wear or the food you eat hopefully based on the best quality you could afford within your budget. Your act of choosing forces companies to work efficiently and keep their cost as low as possible which means better products at better prices. Now, god forbid, you have a car accident tomorrow and are picked up unconscious by an ambulance and rushed to the nearest hospital, how will you shop around for the best quality at the best price for your health care? Without that power of choice there is no need for a company to be efficient or affordable. Their only concern is maximizing their profit and since you have no choice about the service the profit is easily maximized by simply raising the price.
You have some choice about insurance but your insurance provider has no choice about the medical institution you end up in. They cannot shop around like an auto insurance company can for the most affordable repair. So their only options are to either refuse to cover your care or charge you more if they wish to keep a profit. How is this good for you?
Insurance should not be a part of health care. Profit should not be a consideration for health care because it does not assure better service or quality since buyers cannot favor superior providers. We are clinging to an inappropriate idea involving economics that should not even apply to health care. We do it because we have been conditioned to reject anything that even hints at socialism.
