preserve culture? I read a very interesting and moving article in Hinduism today by Dr. Nathan Katz (at http://www.hinduismtoday.com/archives/2008/4-6/09_opinion.shtml ). One thing he said surprised me:
---
[When we learn that Judaism has coexisted without prejudice in India for so long]... We learn that anti-Semitism is not universal, and that it is possible to preserve Jewish identity and religion in the absence of persecution. For this, we feel deep gratitude.
---
Is there a presumption that antisemitism actually helped preserve Jewish Identity? I suppose it makes some kind of sense, communities knit together in the face of adversity.
