When writing do authors plan out the story and KNOW, with certainty, that they will be making a sequel. Or, do they just wait, and see how the public takes it before they start a sequel or series.
I've started a series that I know will encompass four books. but sometimes sequels are called for when the book sells so good. but for the most part, most writers know they will write more stories about the characters. And sometimes a series is planned but the sales are so bad it's never finished. ;-(
Yes I have known since I finished my book that there is going to be a sequel because I already started it and my first book had 452 pages and this one will be about the same.
i don't plan for a sequel. not until i come right to the end of the book, then i know if this is the end of the whole story or just the end of this bit of the story.
if i feel that those characters have more to offer then i start to think about a sequel.
