Question about writing a book?

I know someone who is writing a book. We are aware of another book that has the same loose premise of events. How do we know where to draw the line with it being too closely? If like, the storyline is sort of close; for example, girl grew up in a poor home, went to college, became a lawyer. If these ideas happen in another book, but the storyline is different, is it still plagiarizing? This is an example.

Ideas? Who might I talk to in order to be certain things are okay?

sounds like youre okay unless some big details are identical. by that i mean same dialogue or character names or the exact same details . there are some options though. a current best seller is pride an prejudice an zombies. a big detail is added an you have a different work. i might suggest you check out the nanowrimo site that is the abbreviation for national novel writing month. every year they have a contest to see if people can write a fifty thousand word novel in november. doesnt matter if its perfect the word count is key. this site will have lots of writing tips. plus no qualifications or cost. i would recommend backing up your work though . i had thirty thousand written when my computer broke. ouch!!!
