I live in the St. Louis area and have been told that the growing season is from the beginning of April till the beginning of November. Since it is almost the beginning of April and I'm just getting started, should I buy plants instead of seeds? Are they called seedlings? Also, would anyone have any info on growing artichokes in this area? Any advice greatly appreciated!!

All I can tell you that if your seasons are similar to the UK`s, we gardeners are now sowing our seeds. I myself have little seedlings already coming through (in pots in my greenhouse)
Some seeds (like carrots) are better sown in drills (rows) straight into the ground. But my system with most other seeds (Brussels, cabbage, spinach, tomatoes etc) is to sow one single seed in each pot, and start them off in the greenhouse. Then plant them out when they are bigger and have hardened off.
You can buy plants if you can get them (if you think you are `late`). It`s a much more expensive way tho, and not always as successful as sowing seeds.
