Hi, I'm new here, but am really pleased to have sturabled on such an informative forum.
I've had acid reflux for about ten years now - my main symptom being terrible burning passing up and down my aesophagus when I burped - and have been taking 15mg Lanzoprazole since diagnosis, which has been on the whole successful, though often, during times of stress, or eating or drinking the wrong thing, the reflux would come back for a few days.
Now, though, for the last couple of months or so I've had a vague burning sensation in the back of my throat and back of my nose. I feel I'm clearing my throat a lot, even though mostly there isn't anything there to clear, and feel there's stuff at the back of my nose, though I don't necessarily clear it by sniffing. I also sense my voice is gravelly sometimes.
I've been through all this with my doctor, and she has changed me to Omeprazole, and upped the dosage to 40 mg, which I've been taking for a few weeks now. She said that sometimes patients could become accustomed to certain types of PPIs, and they can lose their effectiveness.
The trouble is, I'm a bit surprised, that though my throat still seems to be suffering, I don't seem to have had my earlier classic symptom of the terrible burning when burping (though I do seem more prone now to burning up food and liquid).
I've seen mention on other sites of developing different types of acid reflux where the sphincter at the top as well as the bottom of the aesophagus become less effective, also about there being a slow drain of acid during the night. But I suppose my main question is, are there other people who've had the same trajectory of reflux story? And if so, what has the outcome been?
Thanks in advance.
Phil
