Question about the sidekick lx 09 ... do I have to have a data plan?

I have service with T Mobile, and I have the samsung highlight, it's a good phone, but I really really want a sidekick.

Currently, I pay ten bucks for unlimited text, and ten bucks for unlimited internet ....

If I just buy an unlocked sidekick on ebay or something, and put my sim card in it, will the internet work? Because If you buy a sideckick from T Mobile, you have to pay 30 dollars a month for some data plan, do I have to do that, or can I just transfer my sim card and it will all work?
