question about the iphone 3g or 3gs?

ok i am very new to this iphone thing . i just hear that you can have internet everywhere, play games, apps , instant message, text, i think. are they all true? what is jailbreaking??? i've googled and asked about that many times but i still don't understand the meaning of it sorry. does that make downloading games and apps free? or does it mean letting it go on t-mobile and other networks? are there other phones that you can play games and apps (like yo momma jokes, dogwhistle, etc.) on? thanks
