Question about playing back MIDI?

Hi, I have a laptop with a built in Realtek high definition sound card. I use sonar to record and playback midi files. However, when I playback midi files, it does not produce the correct sound of the instruments. Is this because the sound card is not capable of producing such sound? Or is it that I haven't set up the software correctly to produce such sound? If it is the first, what kind of sound cards that are capable of producing correct midi sounds?
