Question about nobility and royalty stuff?

So i need this for the story i'm gonna write it's a historical fiction and i do not know much about royalty and nobility.

so lets say tom is a son of a duke but he is a bastard child/a child with one of edward's mistress's will he have/be noble/nobility?
and will he have the title "lord" or will he just be a commoner with blood of nobility?
