Question about muscle building?

While being sore from benching, i know it causes tiny tears that are built up again from protein. Well, when it tears does it tear the whole thing or does it just a little bit? So im basically asking like is it possible to lose muscle while lifting if you dont get enough protein like you did last time since it tore?
