Question about Lincolns Gettysburg Address Speech?

In Lincoln's speech, he mentioned the United States was "a nation dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal." This phrase is also located in the famous document; the Declaration of Independence.

Now, My question is:

Why do you think Lincoln referred to this document (the Declaration of Independence) and not the U.S. Constitution?

I was thinking that Lincoln referred to the Declaration because he gave this speech during the Civil War time, and at that time the Nation was divided because each side felt there was a side (or race) that was inferior or superior (i guess :(?) And Lincoln wanted both sides to adopt the idea that everyone is equal? To preserve the Union.

I dunno! it doesn't even really make sense to me :( what do you think? 10 points best answer :(!
