Question about fear at war?

Just asking a question for a story I'm writing.

When you're in the battle field, or whatever you guys call it, (and if you could tell me what you guys call it, it'd be great.), what do you feel. Like, with bullets flying in the air and stuff. Thank you so much guys. :)
 
citizens like to think its called overseas but for me and my unit its "down range"
 
I've only been on the receiving side of mortars and rockets, due to the fact I'm always stuck on a base. It's just something you get used to, you put it in your mind that it won't hit you. At first it'll scare the bejeezus out of you, but that fades quickly.
