question about credit history?

do you start gaining history on a card once you activate it or do you have to buy something first then the history starts?
so if i got a credit card activated it....then didnt use it for a few months...the history doesnt start till my first purchase? like on my report it wont go by when i first activated it?
 
To start building your credit history you must use the card and make your payment as agreed, it will take 6-months of payments to generate a score.

Use your card for everyday things, never exceed 30% of your credit limit and pay it off in full before the due date and you will be fine.
