Question about charging a scooter battery?

I started charging the battery of my scooter about an hour ago and when I put the clip on the minus thing, there was a spark. Can I continue charging? I noticed that there's that grease around it that you also put on bicycle chains.
Another question: How long do I need to charge it if it wasn't entirely empty all along? Is 7 hours long enough?
