Question about American Freedom and the Election?

I have studied the Vietnam War and have learned that the United States involvement there had absolutely nothing to do with Americans freedom. The North Vietnamese were no threat to us at all. In fact, Ho Chi Minh contacted our government several times in an attempt to seek help from us...help in ousting the French Colonials who had taken over their country. They wanted a free country that was free to govern themselves as they saw fit...just like us.

These are facts.

Even if he thought he was in a war for America's freedom, he has to know by now that it was not really the reason we were in Vietnam. So, why is it ok for Republican McCain and his posse to use his part in the War in Vietnam as a ploy to gain votes? Did Republican McCain really fight for our freedom? I am truly baffled by this and would like someone to give me an answer as to why Republican McCain's time in a POW camp is such a selling point.
digitalfish...fyi...my father was in Vietnam with the USAF...he died in 1973. I would never spit in any soldier's face, but I do not understand why McCain is using his POW status to promote his GOP ticket...it is wrong and I want to know why people let him get away with it. Please don't make comments about me personally unless you know me and my life story.
 
Every man, woman, and child were born to have the God given right of freedom! Even though the liberals started that disaster in Vietnam, it was a noble cause. We lost due to all the anti-war, non working liberal protesters...and public opinion had us back out...and LOSE! Weare not to turn our backs on those seeking the God given right of freedom. we saved Europes azz, why not anyone else's?

Your question speaks volumes. I, in no way, will take away what those soldiers had to go through when they went to Nam and they are true heroes but not because they fought over there. They are true heroes because when they came back to the States, they were treated like second class citizens by their own. Not able to find jobs, homes, and sometimes food and all because they were made to fight in a war (yes, made--most were drafted) that had no bearing on this country.

Because he endured years of confinement in the service of his country. He did what military men do - went where his country sent him. For that he should be honored. It should not serve as the only basis for voting for him.
 
It's our obligation to spread freedom around the world. WE are our brothers' keeper and that's why we sometimes do things that seem unacceptable to others. Dispite unpopular at times, we have to carry on our mission. I don't think it's fair to say that McCain uses his POW
to gain votes. If you were in a POW camp for so many years, would you be able to at least gain something that nobody else would? I mean good and bad. Just like people will laud mothers because of the physical/emoitonal prices they have to pay for their children. In our society, we tend not to respect older folks and ignore the fact that they do have more life experiences and that's something that young people won't be able to accomplish. I respect both Presidential candidates and think everyone should consider all facts before voting. Not just someone is a POW and a woman VP or a bright young half Black man with so much promise.
 
yup you got that . that war had nothen to do with us we just butted our heads into other country's business without reason so i fell like we need to respect people who fought wars but not ones we had no business getting into so i dont feel mccain earns any points from me he didn't fight for our country all he did was crash planes
 
It's easy to read history and draw conclusions, that's the problem with (well educated people) It happened,he was there,good enough for anyone with half a brain.
 
The Vietnam war was a proxy war between the US and the USSR. You cannot judge the actions of the past by today's circumstances. McCain didn't declare war on Vietnam, he was called by his country to fight and he served admirably and should be commended for it.

You sound like one of the people who was spitting in the soldiers faces when they came back from that hell-hole. The military doesn't decide who and where to fight. They sign up to serve their country and fight where they are told to fight. All those who fought in Vietnam WERE indeed fighting for their country whether you think the war was right or wrong.

BTW, I don't think we should have been in Vietnam to begin with. That doesn't lessen the sacrifices that our servicemen made.

Oh and let's not forget that it was the DEMOCRATS that sent John McCain over there to fight.
 
I have learned that sometimes, it is important to look at things in the aggregate. There have been many conflicts that my forefathers fought in that were very weakly connected to an immediate threat to American Freedom. However, it is important to trust that the Politicians that Americans elect have America's best interests in mind. You can question whether or not the politicians that chose Vietnam as a place to fight communism were right or wrong. What you cannot question is that everyone who puts on a US Service uniform is fighting for American freedom. The military is like the big mean dog that is kept on a leash until needed. It was unleashed in Vietnam, Korea, Iraq, and a myriad of other places loosely related to our specific freedom. However, it is always important that the attack dog remains ready, vicious, and effective since not only does it execute missions as given from the commander in chief, it is also a deterrent to keep random countries from doing exactly what you are implying Vietnam did not do. So, question away the politicians choice for where and when to go to war. But make no mistake about the role of a serviceman (or woman). From the first breath they take to make the oath to support and defend the Constitution, until they sign their discharge paper, they are fighting for freedom.
