question about a 1992 dodge dakota?

my dodge dakota's fuel gauge isnt telling me the amount of gas i have in the tank. is it possible to install any other kind of fuel gauge such as ones modified for race cars? or do i have to find a fuel gauge from 1992 and if so where can i find them?
 
The chances are that you have a bad sending unit in the gas tank or faulty wires or a faulty ground coming off the tank to the gas gauge but you could try another gauge bec at times when a gauge fails to indicate any info it's in deed faulty or has a bad connection.
