Qubo channel

You know NBC's saturday morning block? Well, I have Verizon FIOS and I just noticed yesterday that I have a 24-hour Qubo. It's mostly a pre-school channel, but it has some truly bizarre stuff.

Does anyone else get this channel?

I've been watching it for a little over a year now ever since I got my digital converter box in March 2008. For those with digital televisions and digital converter boxes, it's on the second subchannel of ION between ION and ION Life.

It has pretty interesting shows on it, but I wish their lineup wasn't in such a loop. They've got so many shows but they only show a handful of them. Seriously, they're only showing 26 episodes of Babar and Jacob Two-Two, and there are far more episodes than that.

Nelvana, Entertainment Rights/Classic Media, Scholastic, and NBC Universal own a stake in the network, and it'd be nice if they could just change it into a real alternative kids network. Unfortunately, ION owns a bigger stake in the channel, so their network, their rules.

I think the ION station that I get on cable out my way needs to expand its qubo programming on weekends. This past Saturday I was able to watch the shows Boo! and Maisy, then they showed informercials.

Occasionally my antenna can pick up four ION channels from NEPA with my converter box, but after a while, the signal breaks up and they disappear again. I think I need a stronger OTA antenna, or a stronger amp...

ION should make a digital all cartoon subchannel with cartoon shows from the libraries of Nelvana (Care Bears, Raccoons, others) and Entertainment Rights (Filmation cartoons, Casper/Harveytoons, Rocky and Bullwinkle, others) and Universal (Woody Woodpecker and other Walter Lantz cartoons) to compete against Cartoon Network, Boomerang, and Nicktoons Network.

Aw, let the kid dream.

Nobody makes channels these days, especially Big Media corporations that are too cheap to do anything other than transform the networks they've got from niche-specific outlets to something resembling gray goo, everything from everybody.

qubo has so much potential, but because the core of ION (the owner of the network's space and majority owner of the joint venture) is of a Judeo-Christian nature, the network will unlikely expand beyond preschool and "value-based" programming.

That's why you're more apt to see VeggieTales than Rocky and Bullwinkle, Underdog, or Casper from Entertainment Rights, Babar and Pecola rather than Class of the Titans or Ruby Gloom from Nelvana (the only reason Care Bears isn't on qubo is because Nelvana doesn't own the characters [Cookie Jar does] and the owners don't want to "dilute" the brand by having two separate versions on at the same time), Sammy's Story Shop rather than Science Court and Goosebumps from Scholastic, and Sitting Ducks and Maisy rather than Exo Squad, Back to the Future, or Woody Woodpecker from NBC Universal.

There is much potential, but they're limiting themselves largely because of ION, and no, the companies won't create a new channel because Entertainment Rights and Corus are underfunded here in the States and NBC Universal are the second most poorly ran entertainment company on the planet.

Because I don't have cable, Qubo is one of my few outlets for animation programming on TV. It is disappointing that it probably won't go beyond a pre-school level, but I do enjoy watching classics like Rupert or Babar. I have even been getting familiar with some of their other shows like Miss BG.

However, most of the shows is hard to really get into. I would love for them to expand their programming as well, but Jeff Harris has a good point. But I'll certainly accept a free digital children's/animation channel over nothing.

HI BILLY MAYS HERE WITH AN ITEM YOU NEED

Yeah, their programming is really wierd. Like, they just got a show called Sammy's Story Show (or something llike that), that retells classic childrens story books, and they only air it at 12:30am & 5:30am. And they also have really strange ads for their own shows. For Jane and the Dragon, they call Jane "A really cool princess" (she isn't), and for Miss BG they say, "Your life just wouldn't be complete without Miss BG!"

Tell me about it. They showed all of season one, most of season two, and a couple of episodes from season three, and yet, there's over 30 episodes of the series yet to be seen here in the States, and Jacob's the best show on the network. I've had my digital converter box for over a year now, and they've been rerunning the same 26 episodes ever since. I just don't understand what's the hold-up.

You mean Boom acquire Nelvana, Universal and Harvey's cartoons, et al?

That's a nice dream, and I like that idea too, but it's not going to happen as long as Boomerang continues to be treated like the red-headed stepchild of Turner's networks. Acquiring those properties would require more money, lawyers, time and effort than Turner/WB is willing to shell out for them. We'd all like to see Turner and WB breathe new life into Boom and turn it into a contender, but it seems that they're more content to just let it remain an afterthought.

What's up with that, anyway? They were supposed to get a third season like a year ago...

anyway, I don't seem to have a channel called ION. I live in Charlotte NC, and just got a converter box, but I can't find this station anywhere; the only time QUBO comes on for me is every saturday on NBC. I'd like to find this block, any info?

Unfortunately, the Charlotte market is one of the few without an ION affiliate. Closest one is the one in Hendersonville (WAEN 38) to the west and Fayetteville (WFPX 62) to the East. Way out in both extremes, unfortunately.
