Quantum of Solace

For starters there's the much criticised Tosca sequence where an opera about doomed love & espionage is cleverly counterpointed with on screen events.

I could go on but to paraphrase Mr White "Quantum of Solace isn't for everyone. ;)
 
The character that you mentioned is Bill Tanner who is M's Chief of Staff (had to check imdb and Wikipedia for that) but I agree there was a Q like quality to him.

It will be interesting if or how they bring back Q into the new Bond films. I think making him younger would change the dynamic between him and Bond.
 
At least the actions scenes had some reasoning behind them. In previous films a lot of the action to my mind was just random and disjointed from the narrative. It was like they had an idea for some action and it was just inserted in to the film.

I used to be such a Bond fan, but everyone else is doing it and doing it much better. IE 24, Spooks, Bourne etc
 
Quantum if nothing else has got people talking 'Bond' so thats not a bad thing now is it.You'll even love it or hate it..I kinda have a disapionted feeling after Casino Royale.I was reminded that the script was finished quickly because of the writers strike so on reflection this could be the failure of quantum to live upto Casino.
I also feel the director was the wrong choice,I'd have plumped for a Mathew Vaughn myself who did a great film with Craig called Layer Cake.
Another hot topic the length of the movie,personally I thought the usually excellent PRE title credit was too short in my opinion..& had a really hurried look to it.
I have to say though I do like the title,its pure Fleming!
 
Just back from watching it.

Thought it wasnt bad, there wasnt much to the plot I thought. It never got going in my opinion.

The "villain" was a bit poor as well I thought.

Onto the positives, Craig is an excellent Bond and produced a fine performance again and as usual so did the fabulous Judi Dench.

All in all not enough gadgets and plot to sustain my interest.

It's rather surreal seeing many negative reviews and knowing QOS has had the biggest opening yet (accepting inflation makes a bit of a nonsense of that, but hey, I guess enough people went to see it over the weekend). I suspect QOS will be a big enough hit and you'll get more of craggy Craig doing his best/worst Bourne impression in Bond 23, titled:

Bournes Are Forever

Barbara Broccoli & Daniel Craig have already initimated that more familiar Bond trappings will be re-introduced in future outings.

Personally I can do without Q, Moneypenny & wacky gadgets but it's a price worth paying to shut up the incessant whingers.
 
No I'm not. I kind of enjoyed it - by pretending it wasn't a Bond film and instead was just an action movie.

But what I'm trying to do is explain to you that a lot of people not liking this movie won't hurt takings for this movie - as to not like it, you must have already seen it, and the only way to have seen it so far is to have gone to the pictures in the first place. But, what it can certainly do is hurt the franchise.

There will be a lot of people who don't go to see Angels & Demons, purely because The Da Vinci Code wasn't anything like as good as it could have been. But millions went to see The Da Vinci Code in the first place. Didn't make it a good film.

The remake of King Kong was another one - millions went to see that, but it wasn't very good. As there are no plans to make a King Kong 2 it doesn't really matter that it was crap - it was only Peter Jackson's reputation that got tarnished, but he is still held in high regard because of the Lord of the Rings trilogy. Just not quite as high regard as before...
 
Other than the scene near the end when they are trapped in the fire

IMO they have taken Bond to a new level with the new films, the dry humour is still there, but the films themselves seem darker and more gritty.

I don't get all the Bourne references as I hate the Bourne films and love the 2 latest Bond films. In a recent interview Craig said he was signed up for 2 more films, I can't wait.
 
I'm sorry but was this actually the response you wanted to give to the comment I made about the blatent arrogance shown by some who claim to speak entirely for "true Bond Fans?"

I mean, don't you think it makes you look a little foolish to say I'm making ludicrous statements for a true Bond fan, just after I've explained how much of a fan I am and made the point that everyone is entitled to their own opinion on the series, without having to defend their credentials as a fan?
 
They will never be able to win with Bond. If they have gadgets they shouldn't and if they dont then they should !

Quantum of Solace was fantastic as far as I was concerned
 
Which was always closely followed by the maniacal villain giving the game away as spoofed in the Austin Powers films.

Maybe the guy who had the Thunderball rights shouldn't have given up the ghost before he died.

There's obviously room in the market for a dark edgy Bond a la Ian Fleming as well as a cartoon character who drives around in an invisible car.
