Quantum of Solace

They don't make films for the bloody "Bond afficionados", they should make them for the benefit of the general public! You know, the majority of the film audience...

I enjoyed Quantum of Solace a lot, and actually felt it was a bit of a return to the globetrotting, high adrelanaline Bond style that I found a bit lacking in Casino Royale (which was very good by the way, but this was more Bond).

I think there's quite a quite arrogant tendencey nowadays to be patronising about everything which doesn't take itself incredibly, incredibly seriously. I'm not one of the people who bashed The Dark Knight and said that Batman should have George Clooney and nipples (it was also actually very, very funny in its own way), but when it comes to the Bond franchise I really do associate it with cackling megavillains hatching plans of world domination in hidden bases situated under volcanoes. And I think people today have gone so far up their own arse that they look down on anyone who enjoys a bit of escapist fun.

People say that Casino Royale was closer to Fleming's vision, but surely the film franchise has become a different entity to the original novels by now?

The two Daniel Craig films are good, solid films, but I do wish that they could be a bit more fun. And I'm not ashamed to say that even if people are going to accuse me of being stuck in the past and missing the point.

And that is the film's biggest problem. There's no single threat to be averted, just the vague idea that some people are a bit thirsty. The old villain-in-his-secret lair has become such a clich

Saw it yesterday and lots of things bugged me.

The theme, terrible. Can anyone hum it or even remember it?

The plot, non-existant. What, how & why was it all happening.

The product-placement, annoying. Okay, we get it. Whichever backwater hive of scum & villiany (sorry George) you are stuck in, you only drive the very latest Ford or Range Rover.

Super-human Bond, why. In Casino Royale when Bond was beaten up, you felt his pain and it showed on him. Now he's leaping off tall buildings, through windows and out of planes with hardly a scratch.

But, there was a lot I liked. It looked good, the actual soundtrack by David Arnold was classic Bond, the sequence at the Opera was very well put together, I was ready to book at room at the Hydrogen-powered hotel but I think it may be closed for a refit now :D, and you can't fault Daniel & Dame Judy's performances.

After the brilliant Casino Royale it just seems that they are slowly sliding back towarRAB the days of Moore & frienRAB.

I must be one of the very few who didn't think much of 'Casino Royale' - I just felt that had jettisoned everything that defined a Bond film for me.

So, having read bad reviews of QoS, and having read about them stripping out the gadgets, the girls, the pithy one-liners, I was thoroughly expecting to dislike this (but I went to watch it anyway).

But, no! I thought QoS was bloody fantastic!

Despite the absence of some Bond staples, I thought they succeeded in creating that Bond feel, and Daniel Craig, for me, is shaping up very nicely in the role.

True - it wasn't a typical Bond-style plot as it wasn't focussed on the diabolical machinations of some evil genius and Bond's efforts to thwart them, as you'd expect - in fact, the Dominic Greene stuff was more a sub-plot. Instead, it's more of a character study of Bond balancing the grief he feels at the loss of Vesper against his duty as an MI6 agent. And I personally thought they got it spot on!

What was really great was the way that so much was unspoken, and the plot lay more in the nuances of the piece - in Craig's superb body language, whilst still maintaining that stoic Bond veneer.

And that final scene where Bond chooses duty over revenge tied it all up very nicely for me.

So, with 'Quantum' established as a 21st Century Spectre, I can't wait for the next one!

Yeah i wasnt that impressed. They have taken a lot from the Bourne Ultimatium. It wasnt as good as Casino Royal, the plot was pretty thin and ill agree that i thought the villian was weak. I did however like Olga Kurylenko, and Daniel Craig was brilliant as usual. Overall its a good action movie, but not as good as Casino Royal, but still better than pierce brosnan movies.

everyone seems to forget that the Bond in QoS is not the Bond that we know from Live & Let Dive, Tomorrow Never Dies etc etc - he has just become a 007 and is still becoming "Bond" as we know him - this is only his 2nd mission after Casino Royale

That would mean a never ending diet of death rays & invisible cars.

Personally I'm glad those days seem to be over & the Brosnan era viewed as a false dawn.

With all due respect - every single person on this thread who has said it is shit has been to see it at least once. It is because Casino Royale was so good that people went to see Quantum of Solace - then came out disappointed.

QoS not being very good isn't going to hurt the QoS box office takings - but it may well hurt it's DVD sales, and whatever Bond film comes out next, because a lot of people will have been put off going to see the next one because they weren't happy with QoS.

I have to say i didn't think much of the story in this films - it was all about the chases and the fights and there wasn't any story. You couldn't care for any of the characters either.
They could have cut it down and stuck it at the end of casino royale.
One thing that annoys me about the bond films is the credit scenes at the beginning go on too long and don't add anything to the story.

Really?

For the benefit of those of us who clearly missed the message, what was it?

(Because otherwise I'll keep pointing out the Emperor is naked)

Could someone please explain something for me?

I just read (not seen the movie yet) that Bond gets his '00' status in this movie... hasn't Bond always been a '00 agent' (007?)

I saw this a couple of weeks ago and it was ok. My main problem with it is that it seems to have gone so far from the Bond franchise now. It's a good action movie, but it just doesn't feel like Bond anymore, I haven't read the books and I know people say this is more like the books than any other, but is that a good thing?

I just found it all a bit adult now, Bond has always been a family film, I went to the cinema and it was packed with families of all ages, pensioners etc, but I think it's strayed from being a traditional series enjoyed by all, to just another action film.

Personally to me Bond was always the suave, smooth operator with oodles of charm and gadgets, but now he's just a bit dull, serious and tough.

One tip is to watch Casino Royale before going to see this, as I watched it ages ago and had forgotten what happened, so half didn't make sense to me.

People have got to remember that as Casino Royale was a reboot & QOS is set just one hour after CR that this Bond is not the Bond we are use to but is still new at being a 00 - so still has some rough edges & lacks the charm of the BonRAB that have gone before
