Quantum of Solace

Some would argue that all monopolies result in thinly disguised extortion.

Not Gordon Brown though seeing as how he rubber stamped the merger of LloyRAB & HBOS. ;)

It was listed in the credits.

It's probably just a nod towarRAB the old names, and why the name wasn't mentioned in the films dialogue

Nope, not Spectre, Quantum, hence the film's title and lack of white cats sitting on baddies laps;) .

Most noteably the second unit director, hence the action scenes being very, very similar.

It was well made but ultimately I found QoS to be a disappointing footnote to Casino Royale basically.
Nothing said in it could not have been covered by tagging another 30 mins on to the end of CS.

The eeevil plot was a minor diversion allowing Bond to get over Vesper by killing lots of people who posed little threat while getting only a fraction closer to finding out who Quantum were.
And oh look, another building is destroyed at the end of a Bond movie. So much for re-inventing the franchise!

God that was dull. The plot was incomprehensible (I would advise that you rewatch Casino Royale before you see this - it's a sequel.), the main villain is instantly forgettable and the action sequences were nothing original. Is every Bond film going to start with a parkour rooftop chase? Bourne did it better in Ultimatum.

Let Bourne do all of the hand to hand, double crossing, black-ops stuff. I want my old Bond back. I don't give a toss about his love life. How about a couple of gadgets, a bad guy with a masterplan (making some Bolivians a wee bit thirsty is hardly going to bring the world to it's knees), henchmen and a secret base.

They should also hire a real director. Spend a bit of money and get Ridley Scott or someone of that stature.

My least favourite Bond film so far. Casino Royale was a giant step forward but this is three steps back and a fall through a plate glass window. Spooks on BBC1 has me more engaged that this confused mess.

I was impressed, it was a lot better than I expected after reading such negative reviews. Some great sequences
(notably the opera, the plane fight, the hotel at the climax)
and a terrific performance from Craig. Judi Dench, Olga Kurylenko and Giancarlo Giannini were also all very good.

Not as good as Casino Royale, but certainly not as bad as Die Another Day. The shorter running time actually works, CR ran just that little bit too long IMO. The script is fast and witty, even if the plot is a little thin.

The only real downsides for me were the anonymous villain and the frantic editing. Greene is not menacing enough for a Bond villain, and some of the action scenes felt like one long blur because of the rapid cuts.

7/10

So James Bond is an assassin. Didn't we already know that in the 60's, 70's and 80's films? The thing with Bond was he didn't just turn up to work one day, shoot a bad guy then collect his wages. He's suave, quick thinking, lives on adrenaline and knows that each adventure could be his last.

I was watching Moonraker the other night which I really enjoyed. It's vastly underrated, the effects for the time it was filmed were superb.

I've yet to read any of Ian Fleming's books so I guess I can't really comment but the films I think set out to make Bond life seem glamorous somehow. I doubt the Books take that route at all. But it's the glamour, the girls, the action and yes even the gadgets that people look for in a Bond film.

Let's face it, in a one on one battle with Hugo Drax in space, Bond was done for, if it was not for a tiny little dart shot with the flick of his wrist. Or in Goldeneye, Alec Trevelyan has Bond at Gun point on top of the Goldeneye cradle, but the mereest flick of his ankle and he finRAB his way out. That's suaveness, that's what sets a James Bond film apart from any other action film. And that is what I miss.

The massive box office of QoS seems to imply that this is no longer what a lot of people look for in the franchise since the CR reboot.

He co-erced the information out of Greene before dumping him in the desert

The thing to bear in mind is that the entire plot is subsumed by Bond's revenge agenda.

He stumbles onto Quantum because of this.

To my mind the script is quite clever & polished in this regard but obviously a lot of the audience prefer to be spoonfed.

I was so excited when I went to see QoS yesterday. I chose not to read any reviews, or check out the theme tune beforehand.

I can honestly say that along with Madonna's offering, that was one of the worst Bond themes I have ever had the misfortune to hear. No, I am not a die hard Tom Jones fan, but think an artist like Bjork, or a singer like Skin would have done a much better job of it (rant over)

Then the film.
I now see what less is more means.
I actually found myself at one stage looking at the cinema ceiling to give my eyeballs a rest. So much action - so little substance.
A big fat shame.

*missmaisie makes a note to buy popcorn and settle down to CR this evening*

Saw it on Sunday - thought it was great, but it's no Casino Royale. I really think Craig is the best Bond since Connery (and if he carries on like he is going, the best Bond ever). Sure he's not typically 'good looking', but he's one hell of an actor, and he's bringing a depth to Bond that we arguably haven't seen before. You can also tell that the last 2 films have taken a leaf from the 'Bourne' films.

I actually preferred this to Casino Royale. Olga Kurylenko was brilliant throughout, I thought Gemma Arterton's character could have done a bit more though!
