Quantum of Solace

This to me sums up everything bad about Bond. The staid formulaic films were wearing thin in the 70s.

While I admit that Casino Royale was better than QoS, Qos is still a step in the right direction. Bond is an assassin. He always was.

Strawman.

Did I ever say they should mimic Die Another Day? Or perhaps I was referring to the likes of The Spy Who Loved Me, Goldeneye and You Only Live Twice.

And I really liked the opera scene by the way.

The Ipcress File and Billion Dollar Brain did it for me.

Unfortunately the latest Bond bus isn't going where I would like, no fault of the idea, but just the way it has been realised by the script writers.

I don't know what's more depressing:

A) - A charmless Bond (played by a charmless Craig - I still regard him inherenty miscast.)

or

B) - People paying to make QOS a huge hit.

The reason we're stuck with Craig and this gritty Bourne style is because too many people don't care about Bond. Bond is not charmless, not a thug in a suit, not gritty like Bourne and the gun barrel should never be at the end of a Bond film. The producers have betrayed Bond and people validate this by paying to make QOS a huge hit. Most people seeing QOS aren't true Bond fans. Very depressing.

By the way, prior to Craig every Bond actor had a traditional gun barrel opening. Craig's Casino Royale gun barrel - the very first gun barrel of Craig's Bond career...

...was set in a toilet. The background of his gun barrel were the toilet wall tiles.

If that doesn't sum up Craig's Bond and the state of the Bond franchise, nothing does. I'm sure Albert Broccoli and Ian Fleming would be ashamed of that.

Disagree a little bit here. The Bond villians weren't the problem. It was the tone and pacing of the films. They where trying to hard to create a Bond that had the best bits of the Connery films, and the best bits of the Moore films, and they only got away with it twice. Elliot Carver is a typical little man hiding behind a desk using worRAB to fight his battle, and I thought that Sophie Marceau was excellent.

However I do agree that the problems with the Brosnan era had little to do with Brosnan himself.

The problem was they where on the right track with the Dalton films, however the (incorrect) perception of them was that they were not a success hense the slight change in direction.

Just been to see it.

It was good, but not as good as Casino Royale. The plot was a bit 'meh' but the action scenes were great and pulled the film back up for me. And as with Casino Royale, Daniel Craig didn't dissapoint me as Bond in the slightest.

7.5/10

Was slightly expecting more, particularly after the brilliant Casino Royale.

saw this at the weekend and think my main problem with the film is that the plot doesn't go anywhere and nothing is ever explained. When the credits came up I was thinking that can't be the end because nothing has been explained yet.

The film started out with that girl wanting to kill the general, then Bond found out he was stealing water and then the girl killed him at the end like she was going to do at the start of the film. What happened with all the water he had stolen was never explained, neither was how Bond knew they were called Quantum he just seemed to use that name without being told it. Neither did he do anything to find that bloke in Russia he just turned up there based on a photo he stole.

It felt like the script had gone through a few different drafts and then they had all been meshed together with no thought at all

The bad reviews for this 007 outing mystify me.

Bond finally catches up with Bourne & surpasses him.

So good I'm definitely going to see it again this weekend.

Me too. On both counts.

I actually prefer it to Casino Royale I think.

If the likes of Kermode are complaining they cant follow it, then Mark dear boy its time to retire...

The only mention of it in CR was that Bond didn't "give a damn". I think it's safe to say the DC (rebooted) Bond has never much cared either way.

Disagree. It wasnt as good as the last one OR the Bourne films. The action scenes gave me a headache the camera was all over the bloody place. Didnt fully understand the plot (or lack of it). I miss Q and the gadgets, and Moneypenny and the humour. Craig is excellent but it neeRAB changing or all it is is a fast pace action film. 5/10

My comments weren't aimed at you directly as you're one of the more reasoned critics of Quantum of Solace.

I do feel however that pandering to received wisdom of what a Bond film should be like leaRAB to abominations like Moonraker & Die Another Day.

Pure lowest common denominator pablum.

I saw it on Saturday. Although not a great film, it was better than I expected and I preferred it over the corny, over-the-top previous films in the franchise. It felt a more adult film.

It also felt like a bit of a linking piece. It was linked to the past in that it was largely about Bond exercising his demons over Vesper. I think to have had a big "single threat to be averted" would have overshadowed that, so I don't see the lack of one as a problem. It was linked to the future by the discovery of Quantum, who I am sure will feature in future. Someone other than Bond put the bullets into the bad guy in the desert.

So for me this wasn't a one-dimensional Bond, but a snapshot of a Bond at the start of a character arc. At this point he wasn't very likeable. I hope in a few years we'll see him differently.

The hole Bond parachuted into was an old water course, and he found evidence of dynamiting. So the bad guys were actively diverting rivers in order to make artificial shortages.

I suspect it was just a part of some larger plan. They had just installed a puppet leader in that country, and they could hold him to ransom via the choke-hold on water (in addition to any personal threats), so they had virtually acquired a country. I suspect they intended to use it as a base of operations for the next stage, whatever that might be.

I agree the old Bond had just become a cheesy parody of itself, new Bond I like a lot, I actually preferred QoS to CR, it was fast paced, not that hard to follow and didn't give the game away, I hope that the next instalment can follow up where this left off, Quantum look like a worthy adversary for 007 (same can't be said for some of the earlier bungling organisations that barely managed more than one cinematic outing).

I have to admit though:

At the beginning I said to my mate, it's odd Bond having an Aston Martin that doesn't have a pop-up bullet proof screen, oil slick release mechanism and guns. :D:D:D
