Quantum of Solace

Nothing needed "rebooting" into the Bourne identity.
Die Another Day had a superstar Bond girl in Halle Berry, all the things that make a fun movie and earned 450 million worldwide..plus whatever the DVD and TV rights were, added to that
I guess the media and the trendies have to pretend that never happened to make the last two movies seem more relevant.
The marketing departments learned many lessons when Timothy Dalton didnt quite make the grade, they didnt disrespect Roger Moores movies in those days to promote Dalton, the way Brosnan has been very lately.

Daniel Craig does look like he can handle himself in a fight, but he is not hanRABome or charming in any way.
A "quantum" of interesting, fun, coherrent plot was missing from the new movie.
The producers should stop watching the Bourne movies and taking Austin Powers so personally...thats what causing the problems

Roger Moore was the best. That was the golden age of Bond films. Unfortunately I dont think it will ever be as good as that again. :(

To be honest I cant help feel that the Bond films have kinda had their day. I cant see where they can go with it now. Everything that can be done has been done already. When it gets to the point where they have to change things and strip the franchise of everything that was good, maybe its time to call it a day.

Well there's an interesting scene in Quantum of Solacewith Mathis which infers by default that James Bond is a code name.

So that would explain why Judi Dench is M to both Daniel Craig & Remington Steele.

Although it doesn't explain what Roger Moore was doing visiting the grave of George Lazenby's wife in For Your Eyes Only.

Continuity hell. Don'tcha just love it. ;)

Well, that's two who agree (you and Alan Partridge). Don't really know whether to take this comment seriously (they can't really mean it, can they?) or not.

i simply adore CR (and watched it again last night), so i went to QoS with some hope .....

SPOILERS AHEAD SO TAKE CARE

*sharp intake of breath*

the running time was TOO cut back, they were trying to cut off the fat, but ended up cuttung some of the meat off as well! another TEN MINUTES ADDED would have filled in nicely about why bond went back to mathis, toned out the starter car chase ..... and general added other synopsis storypoints

gemma arteton's character ..... WHY? she felt totally superflous and added virtually NOTHING to anything of the film ..... even her "oops i've tripped you up" bit was completely flat and pointless!! and it's a pity they had to waste such a great death scene on her ..... that should have went to MATHIS IMO

the "feel" of the movie ..... IT WAS EUROPEAN!!! that would do with the director, and some of the fast cutting was maybe too quick for some

the end fight ..... greene DOES NOT LOOK like someone who could fight ..... he ended up as some sort of angry short man, but to his credit he did put ferociousness into it! his end though was poetic justice LOL, but who put the two bullets into him?? and his henchmen were pretty much bodies in front of him, except his main one (the poor sap LOL). being put in that position, wating for bond to come round the corner ..... then getting blown the buggery! ..... EVEN IN A NECKBRACE TOO!!!! oh yeah, when you have been found out you DO NOT get up and leave your seats, leaving bond to happysnap your stupid faces!!!

and were QUANTUM tryin to turn bond against MI6? well, they should have been, as it was pretty obvious to them that he was going through them like a knife through hot butter! there was a touch of presumption about that, but it wasn't delevoped ..... and added to the slight confusion when bond was finally brought in by M

generally it didn't feel "right" IMO ..... there wasn't that much coheesiveness to the main storyline, and didn't hold together at all well, not even close to some of the worst bonRAB made!!!

BUT THERE WERE GOOD POINTS

the excellent chases, the carchase, the footchase, the boatchase, the planechase (very nicely started with quite a shock!) with a breathtaking freefall into one of the sinkholes and the final conflagration ..... all excellently choreographed

the brilliant entry into slate's house ..... silent, peacefull, ghostly ..... only the outside noise filtering through, and slate's death too ..... almost incidental in it's nature!

camille's storyline ..... a parallel with bond's, but with a more vicious streak through it, as her personal revenge didn't have the baggage of duty holding it down. it's rare to see that in a bond movie, and gives that extra dimension!

and once again little pastiches from previous movies ..... they are hard to find, but i counted two at least

to be honest, after the near perfect brilliance of CR, i'm trying to NOT say the D word ..... but it's getting close to it, and that upsets me a bit! i'll go and watch it again down the line, but this one is not the kind that would make me OBSESSED with it as casino royale did

and i am one of the few who actually LIKE the theme song, but maybe should have re-recorded the shorter version rather than edit it down

6 out of 10 for me, it just didn't grab me as casino royale did ..... add back in some exposition, jiggle some of the storyline and get rid of the superflous characters, and we'll get somewhere nearer what casino royale started out as!

Oh please, for the love of god, keep that man away from the bond franchise!

Honestly, he's so stuck up his own rectum, he thinks he can buy anything. "Oh, I really want to be Bond, so I'll just spend a half a million dollars and that should buy me the part." Get lost, you sily ignoramus and leave the Bond role to, y'know, ACTORS!

I'm not a P Diddy fan, BTW ;)

Is that the same likeable rogue from Live & Let Die who tricks Solitaire into giving up her virginity?

If you ask me behaviour of that type is one Rohypnol away from date rape.

I have seen Quantum of Solace again. I watched Casino Royale again on DVD before the second viewing and it helped to refresh my memory regarding the story. It's an excellent film.

More homages I'd say as they had context within the overall storyline & weren't just littered about like with the demented kleptomania of Di(r)e Another Day.

Well maybe you do rightly say that the Bond books were written differently and I'd then be forced to agree. My ignorance is born out of the fact that I haven't actually read any of Ian Fleming's books. And if they are so different then I am going to find them alien to everything that I've found a Bond film to be.

And that's what I'm talking about here; a Bond film. I'm not talking about the books. I'm talking about how the films have been portrayed over the years and how integral they are to the kind of Bond film that myself and the world has grown accustomed to.

The opening Gun Barrel. For pity sake that is crucial.
We have an opening Chase sequence.
We have the Song Titles (which thankfully the modern films have kept on)
We have Moneypenny, hopelessly in love with Bond.
We have Bond going off to see Q before he goes off on his adventure. And we love seeing the gadgetry, the sheer fun that Bond has making fun of Q and the gadgets. Much needed lighthearted fun.
And of course we have the secret bases, the megalomaniac villains, the last minute escapes, the bad guys who stop around to gloat giving Bond just enough time to stop their plans.

That is a Bond film. That's how they've used Ian Flemings creation to entertain us over the years. Sadly for me the films have gone another direction. I'm going to have to get over my Bond Xenophobia because I just don't think we're going to hear the likes of "Now pay attention 007", "Aahh Moneypenny" or "We meet again Mr Bond" in a Bond film again. I'm not going to say sorry for thinking that's a bad thing.

Well I finally got round to seeing the latest feature length Sony Cybershot, Omega Watches, Ford advert (with guest appearances from Aston-Martin and Land Rover who clearly didn't pay enough) and other than the blatant product placement it's pretty good.

Is this the first Bond film which is a real continuation of the previous movie to such an extent where it very much feels like part 2 of a 2 parter? I'd hate to have seen it without having seen Casino Royale first.

As it was, I'd forgotten enough of the details it wasn't always easy to follow. I basically got the gist of it though. Daniel Craig's a very good Bond, but of course Dame Judi steals every scene she's in :)

Daniel Craigs Bond is far from one-dimentional or a charmless thug. Craig portrays a Bond who feels more "real" rather than a cartoon character. Craig's Bond is one that's easier to empathise with. He clearly shows real emotions.

Am I the only person who gets sick of seeing comments like this?

I've been a Bond fan since I was a child. I owned all the films on VHS. Then I purchased them all again on DVD, imported from America because they weren't available over here yet. I've watched each one multiple times. I've read several (albeit not all) of the books, too.

I am a Bond fan. I thought QoS was a great film, even if it isn't the best in the franchise. I think Daniel Craig is an exceptional Bond, topped only by Timothy Dalton, for really portraying a deep and complex Bond. Now whilst this is also down to the writing provided to the actor, I think Craig has done a wonderful job with the material he has been given.

I'm all for people having different views and I accept that people won't all like Craig or QoS. But I'm not about to stand here and call those with differing opinions not true Bond fans. It would be incredibly arrogant of me to make such a statement and I'd also look really, really foolish in front of any other Bond fan who disagreed with me.

It was alright.

I'd much rather have had FielRAB as the main Bond Girl, I'd quite like to see a Bond girl that's a bit scatty like her. Shame she was so totally pointless in the scheme of things.
