Can somebody explain why there are 2 QI episodes on Iplayer
one is called QI XL, why is that?

Its an extended edition of the show, 45 minutes for the XL and 30 minutes for the regular edition 
I never watch the 'regular' edition, now ... But then, I've been a sucker for alternate/deleted scenes for decades.
For example, just watching the deleted scenes of Ang Lee's Hulk (not a great film); there seems to be enough material for a whole new movie
I love that sort of thing, and think there should definitely be extended versions of other shows, such as Would I Lie To You, or Argumental. I think it all kicked off with Have I Got A Bit More News For You.

You have to be careful with extended editions as sometimes the beeb don't broadcast them or make them available online. It happened with the last series of QI and a couple of editions of HIGNFY.
Sometimes they can have 10-15 minutes of drivvle that was rightly cut out of the standard edition.
It's it the editors job to go through the material and give the viewers the best possible 30 minutes.
Saying that, I usually do watch the etended editions just incase there is a good bit that the editor didn't think was relevant to the show or went off on a tangent.

Only watch XL since they started it, which gets me wondering which bits are cut, esp with the 8.30 pm start time on BBC1.
