Hello - I have a 4 and 1/2 month old Male American Hairless Terrier, he is GREAT! However he does not whine or bark to go out if he is out of the kennel. He does his business in front of the door. I have tried using a bell but he has not mastered that either. If he is in the kennel then he does whine and then bark. What should I do? Any suggestions??

Also I take him out - in the morning and after his meals but through out the day when he is not in the kennel he goes at the door that I take him out through.

hi there!
ok, when we trained my dog, we always gave her a treat right after she did her business outside. then once she got used to the idea of outside=treat, we would give her a rubdown or another form of praise. then she realized outside=love. she caught on pretty quickly that way. it would be a great idea to invest in a book or dvd on how to potty train your puppy too. it made it a lot easier for us.

hope this helps! =]

what daa said is right, you should take the dog out 5 to ten minutes after eating and after vigorous play periods. then eventually your dog will catch on and WAIT by the door until you see him and take him out

Just take him outside at regular intervals - don't expect him to let you know that he needs to go out (in the crate or out of it). When he's a bit older, you can try the bell thing again.

When you take him out of the kennel, go outside with him immediately. Wait till he goes, just stay outside till he does something. Then praise him a lot, give him a biscuit and take him in. Right after he eats, do the same, and right before bed. He'll get the idea and maybe you can let him out of the kennel more often, sounds like he thinks that's his house and the rest of the house is a bathroom.

And the bell, each time you go to the door, you hit the bell so he hears it, then after a few days, put a biscuit near the bell when you both are going out and wait till he hits the bell, praise him and give him a biscuit, he'll catch on quickly.

Followup: Well he can't hold it all day. You need to go home for lunch or get someone else to do it. That's why he's going by the door. And if you are there, don't wait for him to whine. Just take him out every hour and follow the above procedure.
