Publishing your first book?

I've just finished a story i have been working on for some time now and i guess i'd like to publish it. If you could just give me some tips how to go about and get it published and anything that goes with it or info. Also i live in Australia
 
Contact the writers centre in your state.

Alternatively, find a copy of "The Australian Writer's Marketplace". This book is a complete list of all publishers and agents in Australia, their areas of expertise and their requirements. The book is available at most public libraries.
