Public Enemies (release 1st July 2009)

There seems to be some debate on it. Some people I've spoken to have said they didn't notice any problems and others say they have. I found some of the dialogue to be too low then all of a sudden shoot right up and some of the sound effects were pretty deafening. I've read people say it's down to the cinema not being able to handle the audio properly and others saying it's the way Mann deliberately mixed it x

You're exactly right :D

A 4* star movie that is let down by the poor sound quality throughout, especially in the first 20 mins. I thought it was the projectionist playing silly buggers too, so my apologies to him :D

My cinema has a screening on Wednesday. I pay no attention to the critics, they never like anything I enjoy anyway. The clips I've seen (most recently the clip shown during Depp's interview on David Letterman in the US) look amazing. I think I'll love this.

Just got back from watching it, i really enjoyed it, one of the best films i've seen this year. Johnny Depp was excellent in it, as was Christian Bale (who thankfully talks properly and not like Batman!). Michael Mann directs is brilliantly as well, i love the realistic way gunshots sound in his films, it's almost like a nuclear bomb going off, lol. I actually can't find anything that i disliked about it. Excellent film.

How come all the talent involved managed to come up with something as mediocre as this.
And I for one certainly do not "lap up guff like Transformers 2".
As for the ludicrous Empire five stars, I can only assume that the reviewer owes Michael Mann money or something.

I usually adore this man's work, but Miami Vice was a massive disappointment for me, hope he is back on track for me with Public Enemies.

i saw it today. it was rubbish. the middle bit could have been entirely cut out and it would have made no difference

and what was with the dodgy camera work? it looked more like a tv show than a film

Just saw it. the sound was GHASTLY up until the last reel, where it actually sounded like a film. God knows what they were doing. The picture quality is also very poor in places...you can see the HD video completely burning out on highlights. They used the comparitively antiquated Sony Cinealta tape camera, where a modern option would have been a viper or a RED. It just can't cope.

I haven't heard a film that bad for a long long time though. Really poor.

Would have been much better shot on film and not DV though, despite what the director says. He's known for those great visuals in films like Heat but this just looks cheap.

I saw this today and was so disappointed. The first time I have spent the whole film wondering if I should just leave as it was so bad. The camera work was irritatingly shaky and in the action scenes looked cheap, naff and cobbled together. The story line was non-existant. A shame as Johnny Depp's films can normally be relied upon

found it very boring
and the camera work really annoyed me in the beginning, didnt really notice the sound maybe cos i was so distracted by the camera work lol

If i'm honest i really didn't notice that it wasn't done on film. The way that it was filmed doesn't detract from the enjoyment at all. The people that are saying that it does are just being picky for the sake of it, half of the people that are whining about it on places such as the IMDB forums haven't even seen the film.

I just read the review on TeleText, as usual the idiot on there has given a good film 2/5. I swear he only does it to be controversial, pretentious prick...
