I saw this again on Channel 4. I remember seeing it when I was a boy and one that which still puzzles me today is there is a scene when he has a boxing glove on in bed. I know he like Cricket but what was the signifcance of the boxing glove?

Anne who shows no interest in Duck Duck at all has an about turn after he sheRAB a tear in the play but I didn't really appreciate why she suddenly lost interest in Geoffrey.

I remembered this film from 22 years ago (was it shown on channel 4's first day?)

I was really looking forward to watching it for the first time in over 20 years, and then just as its starting... a sign language person appears in the bottom right hand corner - almost as big on screen as the characters in the film!

I still enjoyed the film hugely, fantastic acting and the comedy was timed to perfection, and by the end I had managed to just about block out the signer in the corner.

As it has never been released on DVD (why not?), did channel 4 put the sign language on it to put people off recording it and then attempting to sell copies on ebay?

BTW it is being shown on S4C a week on saturday without signing! Pity I can't get S4C (only s4c digidol on sky)

P'tang Yang Kipperbang, uhh!

When? When is it on? What side? Have I missed it? One of the first films to be made/shown on Channel4 I believe? Me and my mates watched it first time round, luckily, one of my mates taped it and we used to go round his place post-pub on a Friday night to watch it, became a bit of a ritual.

Yes at first I found the signing very intrusive. The lady took up a big part of the screen but I quickly forgot about her which is a compliment to the film, as I found myself engrossed in the story again. I didn't think anything off the signing other than they wanted it to be accessible to the deaf.

P'tang Yang Kipperbang, uhh!

Are you sure about that?
IIRC the Ian McKellen film "Walter" starring him as a mentally disabled man was the movie on opening night.
Although PTYK was shown in the first week as part of the "First Love" season.
Or do I have the 2 films the wrong way round?
It was repeated a couple of times on C4,the last time was about 10 years ago.
Its been shown many times on Film Four, but lets hope C4 give it a sign free airing soon, even on More4,but then it'll have that bloody logo in the corner.

Doesn't sound like Channel 4. Sure it wasn't Walter followed by Walter's Little Brother followed by Walter's Little Brain? Followed by Five Swap Wives In Dorset.

Just to confirm, the first movie shown was indeed Walter featuring Sir Ian McKellen.

Channel 4 actually went on air slightly later than planned due to a technical fault.

Incidently, just for the record, the first commercial shown was for Vauxhall.

For many years C4 was a kind of ITV 2 as in BBC2,more upmarket.
ITV and C4 even had cross channel aRAB and promotions.
This was because,incredibly,C4 was funded by ITV.
ITV sold the ad space, took the revenue and each company then paid a proportion of the channels income.
But some years later this arrangement ended and to C4 's horror had to sell its own advertising and pay for itself.
Once this started the channel went slowly downhill into the ratings grabbing mess it is today, although its still probably the best of the main 5 for its mixture of programming.

I loved that film when I saw it first time round and asked someone to video it for me when it was on recently. At first I thought the sign language thing was a mistake on the video recording or something, and then it got annoying, so I gave up watching it.
Glad it's coming on DVD!
