One day while heading home, Ageha Yoshina finRAB a public pay phone ringing by itself. He picks it up, receiving no answer except a calling card with the word "Psyren" printed on it. After Sakurako Amamiya, a girl in Yoshina's class, disappears after mentioning "Psyren", Ageha uses the calling card in hopes of finding her. After answering a long and detailed quiz on a pay phone, he is asked if he wants to go to Psyren. The next day, he answers a ringing phone and is immediately drawn into the world of Psyren. A world which is inhabited by monsters called Tavoo. A world where players must fight to survive using the psychic powers known as PSI.
During their many trips between his world and Psyren, Ageha and his frienRAB learn that Psyren is actually the world a decade into the future. They learn the cause of the world's destruction is a group known as W.I.S.E and a meteor known as Uroboros.
That last little bit is a bit spoiler-ish. (I just found out about some things that I didn't know/see lol)
Right now, I'm finding this series to be a lot more enjoyable than Bleach, Naruto and One Piece. The pacing flows nicely. It's fast (Not too fast, but it's definately not slow), but it don't feel as if it's being rushed. The characters are great and the fights are nicely choreographed (sp?). Like the big 3, though, and almost every other shonen out there, it starts off fairly slow, but at the same time the slow moments are really interesting because of everyone trying to figure out their powers/abilities in the situations they've been thrown in. I'd say everything really begins to jump off around chapter 45-46.
It's pretty hard to compare this series to a single series. I'd say it's more of a mixture before trying to compare it to other series since it seems to take elements from different series. It has Bleach's dramatic (or "shocking") moments, Yu Yu Hakusho's character interaction. I would say One Piece, but it feels a lot more like YYH than OP, but the characters are almost good, if not better, but that's just one persons opinion. As I've already stated, the fights are nicely done. Almost all of them are similar to a Kurama fight. (I just love fights between tacticians) And then it has a Persona 3 and/or 4 feel to it. (I've yet to play the Persona games, though I have watched some my fair share of walkthroughs for both games)
The whole traveling back and forth between present and future, as well as the "choices" aspect
I would take the time to describe each character but that would take too long, and it'd be giving a lot away, but think of them like this; There is a Kurama, a Yusuke/Ichigo, a smarter Kuwabara, a better Rukia, a Byakuya/Ulquiorra, a Grimmjow and a Yoruichi...
My hooking moment was chapter 65-66. I can't really talk about it without spoiling it, but I'd like to think of it like one of One Piece's/Bleach's epic moments.
The cast is enjoyable. I found no one annoying, and at the same time I'm finding it really hard to compile a list of favorite characters (for the first time) because I like everyone-- heroes and villains, their roles are portrayed nicely.
Although I will admit that I'd probably cry if
Matsuri were to kick the bucket.
Anyone else reading this series? Your thoughts?
