Psychological thriller V Horror

What is your preference?

And what examples of the two would you give?

I love being scared witless but have seen little in the 'horror' genre recently that has achieved this.

I thought 'The Exorcism of Emily Rose' was a perfect example of both psychologically and horror.

But horror fans might argue the case that there was not enough gore, blood and guts. Whilst thriller fans would argue that it was too much into the horror boundary.

Have any of you seen this movie...and what do you think?

And what do you see as the boundary between horror and thriller?

For Psychological thriller:

The Shining, Misery.

For horror:

Halloween, Friday the 13th.

Psychological thrillers can scare you and make you feel uneasy without the use of gore and jumps.

Most Horrors depend on the jump tactict too much.
This is good and effective the 1st time around but after a few viewings you remember were all the scares are.

These are very good examples.

Although I must admit that I found Halloween and Friday the 13th at the time were still fantastic in their originality as was Carrie and The Exorcist. All of these films IMO were first generation horror but still maintained a 'what will happen next' suspense aspect to them.

There are many films from that era that were utterly fantastic in that they were first generation of a combination of horror/suspense which sadly now we are seeing a split.

We rarely see a film now that can combine so well...and subsequently either concentrate on one or the other.

Of course this is just my own opinion and it is interesting to get your feedback and other examples of the split..or combination of both. :)

Edit: I forgot to add my appreciation of those other equally fantastic films, Misery and The Shining, which do stand out as clear cut susspense films. These were truly superb and classic suspense movies.

We need more of these movies.
