You have posed an excellent question. Considering there isn't a complete PS2 inside the PS3 (only certain components), the few PS2 components actually help the PS3 maintain it's position above the PS1.

Before i'd spend $699 on a console, i'd just buy a computer.

The whole appeal of a game console is that's it's supposed to be cheaper than a gaming computer.
