PS2 help PLZ!!!!!!! 5 stars for best awnser and good response!!?

i hav a sharp aquais hdtv. when i play ps2 there are black bars on the side of the screen. the screen format is 16:9, the cables are component, is it the games, it its ps2, or the hdtv??
i hav tried 4:3 and full screen but nothing helps =(
racom12, would the bars be on the side if i got a ps3?
