Proprietary Nokia Application - Rotate

It appears that Nokia had created a landscape utility just like RotateMe called Rotate. This application is standard on the E60 to do landscape mode. As the E60 doesn't get as much love around here, I think alot of people were not aware of the Rotate utility. Only recently on the "JP Review ~ Nokia E65" thread was the application made aware to some of us through a link from a French review of the E65. The video on the review shows the E65 with the application in use. After the help of my friend Google, I found the review from AllAboutSymbian on the E60 which mentions and shows the Rotate utility in all it's glory.

While RotateMe works beautifully on the N-Series phones, sad to say it chokes on the E65 and E50. RotateMe is a great program and I think the owner of it should get his props, but it does have a big problem which is the 3MB hit on ram.

Basically I'm trying to get the word out about this utility and would like some help finding it. I'm pretty sure most of us would like to have the proprietary Nokia version of RotateMe....especially the non-early adopters of the N95 who have the E65(such as myself). Thanks.

Is E60 the only phone with a fully fledged Rotate function? I'd be a little surprised cause it's kinda neat. Unfortunately I don't know how to extract the program, or if the models you mentioned are able to take advantage of it.

There's one problem with E60's Rotate, however. You know the keys 1-# act as shortcuts to the 12 items in the menu grid layout. When the phone is in landscape mode the correspondence doesn't adjust accordingly, so key 1 (which is at bottom left when horizontal) still correspond to the first menu item (now at top left), etc. which is rather counterintuitive.

Thanks for the response and the info about the Rotate utility. While the numberpad in landscape mode may be counterintuitive, you should see how RotateMe works on the E65. In landscape mode, the d-pad still works as if it is in portrait mode. When I first signed RotateMe, it was for my N80 and webbrowsing in landscape was really enjoyable. When I got the E65 and signed RotateMe for it, I was pretty let down...I don't even use RotateMe anymore because of the confusing D-Pad configuration. In the French review of the E65, the reviewer had Rotate(Pivoter in French) installed and he even used it. The D-pad function works like it should when he was navigating on it. Actually it would be nice to hear some reasoning, speculation or fact, as to why Nokia has not released this utility to the other non-S60 FP1 units.

You might be able to find the sis on your Z drive with a file broswer (Y-Browser or any other) but I don't know that it will install to any other phone...

Not to mention the fact that the 'Rotate' app might actually be a firmware app, which means that there's no extracting it from the phone -- it's inextricably tied to the firmware/hardware combination.

Well, I did a little test by installing BestTaskman and looking at all the hidden applications on the phone. There are a few but when I tried to run them (to see what they do) a message always came up "It's forbidden to run this application"!

Perhaps the Rotate application is on our phones but it's just hidden away (like zeze stated). At any rate, I had no luck and gave up since I am forbidden from running the hidden applications!

These hidden apps were in Z:\sys\bin IIRC, in case anyone else wants to give it a whirl.....

I tried RotateMe on my N80, and loved it. In fact I would probably always use it except for one thing - it hangs. It works fine for maybe an hour, but after that it starts messing up. I can access the menus but I can't seem to open any of the applications on it, for some reason. A reset usually fixes it, but it's annoying. Landscape looks so good on the N80's resolution, too!

Sounds like a memory issue...RotateMe takes about 3MB of RAM when in use.

HOCKEY found the files or some of the files of the Nokia Rotate App. We just need someone who knows how to make .sis files give us some tips or generate the .sis file for us. The files can be found in the "JP Review ~ Nokia E65" thread.

Ooh, that's great news! I know nothing about generating a .sis file, but I'll definitely be keeping an eye out for that. Thanks for the heads up.

how do you know for sure that the nokia rotate program won't use more ram to do landscape too?

the landscape program for the E70 uses more ram in landscape then in portrait just like rotateme and it is stock.

You're right, I don't know if it uses more RAM, but the utility works properly on the E65, as seen in the French review and that's why a few of us want it. Thanks for telling us about the memory usage of the Rotate program, that's something to keep in mind for users who want to compare the ammount against RotateMe. Honestly, the memory issue isn't so much a problem for the E65 as after startup, I have 25.7 MB free...and after using a few apps, it hovers around the 22-24 range. On my N80ie, the RAM average is around 17-18 after a few uses. RotateMe works fine on the N-Series, but I'm sure a bunch of us nokia fanboys would want this proprietary app.

There is no option. Rotate gives one-click functionality: click once to switch to landscape, click again to switch back.

Additionally, you can exit the programme after rotation but the effect will remain. Not sure if more memory is taken in landscape mode, though.
