In conditions where I can't bounce a flash of a ceiling is it appropriate to use a white card just above the flash to bounce the light, can this be done outdoors? If so how long should the card be (inches), can the white card be 1/5 of an inch thick or does it need to be thin? The reason I'm asking is because a direct flash seems to cause shadows and a bounce does not. Although I have only used the built in diffuser. Thanks in advance!

1) Using a bounce card with no ceiling, e.g., outdoors, results in a lot of light "being lost." However, the light which does bounce off of the card is of a better quality than that which comes directly from the flash.

2) The reason you don't see a shadow is, probably, because there is so little light reaching the subject that there is not enough light to cast a shadow.

There is another alternative to bounce flash ... try a good diffuser like the ones Gary Fong makes.
