Proper way to let indoor cats get outdoor exercise?

I live on a street with too much traffic so I keep my cats inside. But I feel bad every time I see them looking out at the world so I want to let them go outdoors, but safely. I am thinking about finding somewhere off the beaten path and keep them on a leash until I think they won't take off. Your thoughts...
 
You can buy a cat tree they will like this or play with them with toys they will like. They will keep their self entertain if you have two. Try paper bags lay it on the floor they will love it. A leash may work but make sure your cat wont slip through the door if the door is open they may like it outside so much they will try to run out. Good luck.
 
You are right to keep your cats inside, the outdoors is a very dangerous place for cats. You can leash train them or buy them some sort of outdoor enclosure. Just be aware, that even on leash they can be exposed to fleas, ticks, mites, feline diseases, worms, fungal infections, etc. Please take precautions like vaccinations and flea control before allowing them to go out.

remember a cat is like a 2-3 year old kid.. if you had a kid that young - you wouldnt let it run around outside with out supervision...
 
I would not allow the cat outside whatsoever. Altho it may look like fun, there are more things out there to harm your pet then anything.!00% inside cats live up to 15 years longer then indoor/outdoor cats, which life expectancy is about 6 year!

Once you let your cat our and your cat experiences the "outside" world. It's going to be VERY hard to keep it indoors. The cat will want to ALWAYS be outside and since you only want to take the cat to off beat places? It's not going to change.

I live off of a VERY busy street as well and have 3 cats. ALL stay in-doors. I have seen far too many strays and dead cats laying in the street to risk letting my cats outside.

Try to think of it like "What he/she doesn't know, won't hurt 'em" - I think it would be more cruel to keep the cat indoors AFTER having let your kitty see what it's like out there.

My cats enjoy sitting in the window when it's nice outside.. That's good enough!

Plus, a lot of strays carry feline HIV and you don't want you cat getting sick. Please keep your cat indoors..

My co-worker's cat would cry endlessly after having been outside a couple times, she kept letting her come and go and the cat ended up being run over.. I felt so bad, not only for the situation, but it was MY cat's sibling.

I dunno, I wouldn't recommend it.
