Proper tank mate for a 1" convict fish in 5 gallon?

We were given a convict fish, 1" long. Zebra striped if that matters. We put him in our 5 gallon tank we had cycled in case we had another batch of baby fry. We have a 55 gallon with 3 danio's in it, all are 3.5" long male, female, female. We had purchased them to cycle the tanks which they did 6 weeks each tank. We are worried the convict will be lonely until he is big enough to go into the big tank, wondered if anyone knew, should he have a friend and if so what? I don't want another convict particularly, ended up with him because he was put into a gold fish tank earlier today with 5 siblings and he is the only one who was still swimming with his head attached this evening. I would like them all to be together in the 55 gallon eventually though if needed the danio's can move into a different tank, we don't mind buying another because we still would like a community tank honestly if possible.
 
I would put the convict in the 55 gallon tank. 5 gallons is to small for most cichlids. However, if its really small to the point where it might be hard to feed it in the bigger tank, it will be ok in the smaller tank until its 1.5-2 inches max. Just do not add any other fish to the tank because even at a young age they can get territorial.
