There are countless tribes and clans, who are renowned for their barbarian like nature; one tribe however has forever altered the history of our world. This formidable group of barbarians terrified every nation who knew of them and to see a group of those vile and merciless barbarians racing up to your village shouting a battle cry would mean certain death. The fact remains that this group were possibly the most merciless and uncivilised of all the barbarians, but without a doubt, the Vikings gave the greatest contribution to western civilisation due to their creation of the first cities of Ireland, their creation of the first medieval global market place in Ireland and their impact on the creation of Medieval England.
Possibly the most important contribution the Vikings made to western civilisation was their dramatic impact on the creation of modern Ireland’s Cities. In 795-980 A.D they founded all of the country’s first cities including the capital of Ireland; Dublin. When the Vikings began to raid Ireland, it was for slaves, plunder and land. There was no surprise that the Vikings got all three but by settling down in Ireland, they actually helped create the first cities for the country which were Dublin, Waterford, Wexford, Arklow, Cork and Limerick. These first cities of Ireland that the Vikings created were of vital importance as these cities became the first medieval global marketplace.
Another great contribution that the Vikings made to western civilisation was the creation of the first medieval global market place also in the time period of 795-980 A.D. This medieval marketplace is where all the international trading ports and cities come from. When the Vikings came they introduced one of the most influential concepts- a village or town as a outward-looking commercial factory where supplies and goods are made and shipped to foreign markets overseas in return for other goods and supplies from the foreign markets. Thanks to the Vikings most of the western civilisation began to participate in this early global economy that would later transform into what we know as the global economy today.
The last main contribution that the Viking’s made to western civilisation was their creation of Medieval England. In 820-911 A.D., The Viking’s or the North men, as the French called them drive out the French and took the province of Normandy for themselves which gets it’s name from the Vikings. In less than two generations, the Vikings had acclimated into French Language and Society. The Vikings became Christians, spoke French and had completely forgotten their culture in their original country of Scandinavia. The only Viking custom that they never lost was their martial skill and character of their ancestors. This was the quality that gave the Norman’s victory in the Battle of Hastings in 1066 A.D. which gave them the power to form medieval England. The Magnificent towers in Wales that tourists still visit today are there because of the Viking Normans. The Viking Normans created what we now know as Medieval England which has overall made a great impact on western civilisation as they created a clearer path and future for the England we now know today.
As you can see, the Vikings have contributed greatly to western civilisation because of their creation of the first cities of Ireland, their major contribution on the creation of the first medieval global marketplace and their impact on the creation of Medieval England. No other group has contributed this much to western civilisation which is why in my opinion, that the Vikings have made the greatest contribution to western civilisation.
