Question- Discuss how Edward Scissorhands challanges or supports the ideas of belonging present in the poem " Migrant Hostel".

Whilst Peter Skrzyneckis’ Migrant hostel’ shows us the aspects of not belonging. Similarly, Edward Scissor hand’s shows us the difficulties faced by those who don’t belong. Edward Scissorhands supports the ideas of belonging presented in my prescribed text “Migrant Hostel”. Both texts show that due to them coming from a different backgrounds and societies they find it hard to belong due to their differences.
In Edward Scissorhands the concept of belonging is presented through Edward’s own alienation because of the perception of others seeing him as an “outsider” much like Peter in ‘Migrant Hostel.’
In Edward Scissorhands, the first scene where we receive a sense of alienation is immediately after the opening where Peg drives up to Edward’s home which is a Gothic mansion secluded from the rest of society. From this point the camera pans out to form a long shot to show the entire town with their bright fluorescent colours contrasting with the dark dull Gothic architecture in the background which in turn gives Edward’s own home a sense of isolation amongst it’s environment which further implies Edward’s displacement amongst the community much like Peter’s dissonance within his environment in Parkes of which Migrant Hostel is located. Similarly, in the migrant hostel, the quote “barrier at the main gate” is a metaphoric and literal barrier, also giving the impression of imprisonment, sealing off the migrants from the rest of the world. The cumulative effect of both these images alienates both the migrants and Edward by reinforcing the idea that they are outsiders, not accepted as part of the wider community.
