Promotions For Animated Programs

There have been numerous promotions for animated programs over the years. After all, networks want people to watch their programming, and promotions help spread awareness and get people interested. I wanted to create this thread so that we could discuss some of the best and worst promotions that have been done over the years.

I recently read an article that mentioned an upcoming monster truck event that is taking place this June in the United Kingdom, and I was surprised by one of the trucks.

I have to say that this is one of the most unusual promotions for an animated program that I’ve ever seen. I love “Yin Yang Yo!”, but it’s bizarre that Jetix would sponsor a “Yin Yang Yo!” truck like that. I don’t know if doing such is a common practice, but this is certainly the first time I’ve ever heard of such a thing. I’m curious as to what people think about this particular promotion.

Regardless, I hope that this thread can be used to discuss marketing promotions for animated programs, as some of them can be quite interesting. I suppose it could also be used to discuss those for animated movies as well; “The Simpsons Movie” had some of the best promotions that I’ve seen in quite some time.

Whoa, that is one sweet truck! Anyway, I haven't really seen a promotion like this. I don't really go to sports events and such.

I was watching Speed Channel's Monster Jam one weekend when I saw that truck, and was like "WTH?". It was indeed a promotion; IIRC, it was promoting Jetix in Sweden. Apparently, Jetix is its' own channel there, and it features Totally Spies!, Martin Mystery and Atomic Betty as well.

Yeah, Jetix is it's own channel in European countries. I think the United States may have one of the few (if not only) Jetix that shares a channel.

Yeah, Monster Jam was the event that I was reading about; the Jetix / Yin Yang Yo! truck is going to be at the next one as well. They’re also holding some sort of contest to go along with it. I like this promotion; it’s neat. I’m not sure what impact it has on the popularity of the series, but I believe networks should do more things like this.

Worst promotion:

The light box picture of The Mooninites set up around Boston to promote Aqua Teen Hunger Force Colon Movie Film For Theaters that resulted in a bomb scare, and WB having to cough up a huge fine and an apology.

Dishonorable mentions to the Mooninite promo:

- the "I pooted" posters for "Foster's" I saw on subway cars/signs around Chicago a few years ago.

- Kids WB's infamous Recycled-Stock-Footage promos in the 90s and early 2000s, using crudely-looped old footage of Sylvester pointing at something and speaking/the Warner Siblings singing and dancing in place/Pinky laughing/etc. with new dialogue dubbed over them. Compounding this was the heavy use of putting the characters in humiliating, out-of-character or embarrassing scenarios for the sake of the promos...

Interesting all of these are from Time-Warner...

If I recall correctly, the fine they paid was less than what TV spots would've cost. It may have been the worst, but it was certainly the cheapest.

Embarassing scenarios like Batman tucking Robin in and singing the Jigglypuff theme offkey. Luckily a later episode of JLU proved he COULD actually sing.

I got a good laugh out of Robin trying to teach Batman how to fight Pokemon... only to have Batman use one of his devices to freeze Robin's Pokemon in a solid block of ice.
