Promotion For Astroboy

Am I the only one amazed about how much television promotion there's been for this film? I even saw ads during NFL football Sunday(!). I'm not sure where the money is coming from for the exposure but it sure is nice. Disney didn't spend nearly as much for "Ponyo" and I never saw an ad after it opened. I could see Astroboy doing $50 million on its opening weekend with all the ads. Thoughts?

I think AB won't make a lot of cash. Summit Entertainment could care less about it even with all of the promotion. They're banking on Twilight Saga: New Moon to bring home the bacon this fall.

When I see the commercials for it along with some of the character art of the robots, the movie looks blah. The robots are pretty much just the same models or the same faces with added parts inbetween. I just think that with all the time spent on this film, there should've been better people to work on the story, characters, and just go deeper within the manga and '03 animated series to create a perfect movie.

I believe the film has already opened in Japan and Hong Kong, and is doing quite well. There's already talk of a franchise, which I can see happening, since the manga version of Astro contains literally hundreds of adventures that scriptwriters can draw on. Myself, I'm really looking forward to this film. From the clips I've seen, it looks like Astro has been successfully updated without losing too much of the manga's charm. The animation and backgrounds look gorgeous too. My only quibble is that Freddy Highmore is really too old to voice Astro, but the voice is not too jarring I suppose. I have high hopes for this one.

I'm honestly surprised with how much promotion it ended up getting. Not sure how well a movie like Astroboy can do though.

If the movie tanks, not sure how well that bodes for the future of IMAGI and the Gatchaman movie.

Well, if the movie doesn't do well, we can't blame the studio for not promoting it enough. I've seen ads for it everywhere.

I think promotion wise they're doing pretty well. And after seeing the Japanese trailer and the sneak peek clip of the movie, I'm really looking forward to it.
The fact that they have characters from the Tezuka Star System appear really won me over.

Well remember Sony was really banking on the 2k2 Astroboy show?

It got a toyline, advertisement, all 50 episodes were dubbed at one time, videogames etc. and yet it failed.

So yeah, this movie can go 50/50, I don't think it'll appeal to kids but who knows. I'm a big Astro Boy fan and was excited until I saw the trailers, I really don't like them, I think the movie looks NOTHING like what Astro Boy should be even if its good it looks too americanized. The movie was also released in Australia and apparently the movie is very good.

BTW I don't think this will affect Gatchaman, its probably in later stages, it might affect future Imagi movies after gigantor though. TMNT wasn't a huge hit but was still very profitable, it wasn't a very expensive movie and made enough money.

Its a good point. A point that Astroboy has a very niche, segmented popularity that won't be enough to interest audiences to see it.

Well I wish we knew how far along it was, considering they haven't even announced whose currently directing/producing.

Obviously TMNT didn't do that well since they decided not to continue on with sequels or anything which was the intent.

I think a huge part of TMNT was WB and the Weinsteins who demanded voice actors be recast and re-recorded. So basically the ridiculous and pointless introduction by LAURENCE FISHBURNE was their fault. In the reel that Kevin Munroe showed at SDCC, there was this tremendous monologue by Mako as Splinter that never made it into the movie which would've made a great intro. voiceover.

I think that weekend on the box office will be close.

Last year was High School Musical 3 vs. Saw V. The result?

HSM3 got $50 million.

Saw 5 had over $30 million.

It could be similar this year as well, but if Saw wins this battle, then blame Summit for releasing it against a huge cult movie series.

Personally, I have yet to see a single TV spot for this, so I don't know where people are getting this "bombardment" of advertising from. Then again, I don't watch a ton of TV...

Anyways, there is no American audience for Astro Boy, just like there was none for the flop Speed Racer movie. It'll be lucky to make more than $30 million total in it's entire run, especially butted against a hugely (if inexplicably) popular horror franchise like Saw. The Legend Of Zorro (which was a family-friendly adventure film similar to the intended audience for Astro Boy) faced off against the second or thrid Saw on Halloween weekend, 2005, and it was lucky to make a mediocre $16 million. If 9 couldn't make it to $30 million, Astro Boy has no chance.

I have a feeling that the release of the upcoming saw sequel to likely either fail this movie or just something else. But this movie looks decent to say the least, but didnt 9 became a bomb or something?

9 didn't do very well but it got mediocre reviews and it was banking on the name value of Tim Burton and the Nightwatch/Wanted director Timur Bembakov even though they didn't actually write or direct the movie.

It was also rated PG-13.

I forgot to mention why I think its 50/50, it looks americanized and too much like the generic CGi movies, this did not appeal to me since its not Astro Boy to me but that might appeal to people who would not find Astro Boy appealing.

Well I remember seeing a 2-5 minute preview online on youtube that was shown somewhere in asia, it looked pretty cool.

And TMNT did pretty good, 34 million to make and made 95 million. Monroe said if it made 100 million it was definitely getting a sequel. It just didn't become a fad like the turtles were in the early 90s. The toyline did great as well. And Imagi did want to make a sequel, but they wanted to make a more "comedic" sequel, and Mirage decided not to and go with the live action movie we're getting so all is fine in the world of the turtles.

This.

Although, I might see this because I really like Kristen Bell and Astro Boy. I'll wait for reviews like I did for 9...
