program for editing RAW images in Photoshop [2]?

I have a bunch of RAW format images that I need to edit. I typically use Photoshop [CS2], but it doesn't seem to work well with editing RAW images. Any suggestions for a plug-in or other (freeware-type) applications to pre-edit these images?
